About Me
Note: This is a personal blog documenting private voyages. S/V Inquisitive is privately owned and is not available for charter.
I grew up in Alaska, flying around the state with my father, fishing remote waters and developing a deep appreciation for this remarkable place. That early exposure to Alaska's coastline eventually led me from powerboating to sailing—trading speed and fuel costs for the quieter pace of wind-driven travel.
From Power to Sail
My time on the water began around 2010 with a 22' Osprey, but I found myself wanting more time out exploring rather than constantly running back for fuel. The realization that I'd rather get there slower and stay longer led me to sailing classes in 2017. After five years of learning and preparation, I purchased S/V Inquisitive in 2022.
The transition from powerboat to a 45-foot sailboat has been a steep learning curve—one that continues with every trip. Each season brings new challenges in seamanship, boat systems, and the constant problem-solving that comes with maintaining and operating a vessel of this size.
Life Aboard
Working remotely in the IT industry provides the flexibility to spend most of the summer living aboard, with regular time on the vessel throughout the winter months. This balance allows me to maintain connections to shore-based work while pursuing the cruising lifestyle.
Summer means getting out of the harbor when conditions allow, exploring Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay—with plans for some extended trips this coming season. Winter involves about 10 to 12 days each month aboard for maintenance, systems monitoring, and the occasional trip when weather permits. The seasonal rhythm keeps the boat ready and maintains the skills needed for safe passage-making.
Still Learning
With just a few years of sailing experience and three seasons aboard Inquisitive, I'm definitely still gaining experience. Alaska's waters demand respect—cold temperatures, strong tidal currents, rapidly changing weather, and the remoteness of many anchorages require careful planning and conservative decision-making.
This website serves as a way to document the journey, share what I'm learning, and connect with others exploring these waters. Every trip adds to the knowledge base, and there's always something new to figure out—whether it's weather routing, boat systems, or simply becoming a better sailor.
